How to Get Rid of Bees
Trying to remove wasp nests by yourself can become a dangerous and even life-threatening task, considering that multiple wasp stings can even lead to death. Without proper equipment and most importantly the required know-how, wasp and bee stings can result in allergic reactions (chances are you don’t know you are allergic to them before you get stung by one). Also, you will end up with more bees flying around, building new nests after a while. So, self-treat bee removal should be avoided, especially if the nest is in a hard-to-reach area. Better call in an experienced bee exterminator instead.
Interesting Facts About Bees & Wasps
First of all, wasps don’t swarm and apart from stinging, their persistence can cause a nuisance and present a threat to those allergic to their sting. So, if you experience unusual swelling, nausea, giddiness or excruciating pain following a sting, you should see medical help immediately.
Unlike bees that sting only once, wasps can sting repeatedly, and their venom contains a pheromone that sends an alarming signal to other wasps, making them more aggressive. For that reason, it is advised not to swat a wasp near other wasps or the nest. They also live in colonies (self-contained communities) ruled by the queen and the only ones emerging from overwintering are the young fertilized queens that build new nests in the spring.
A wasp’s sting usually wears off within 24 hours, except for a minority of people that are allergic to it, and it can be treated with any deodorant that contains aluminum.
Carpenter bees prefer to build their nests in wood, which is how they got their name. Apparently, they cause a great deal of damage (and severe infestations) to property owners, similar to those caused by other types of wood-burrowing insects.
The only carpenter bee that builds the nest is the female carpenter bee. She works hard to drill out a perfectly dug hole the size of a nickel. The role of the male carpenter bees is to intimate anyone near the nest, by buzzing around. It should be noted that they cannot sting. This is the privilege of the female bees that sting when provoked.
Although similar in size, they cannot be mistaken for bumble bees. The female carpenter bees are distinguished by the black spotted head while the males are plain black. In other words, their colouring is almost opposite to the colouring of the bumblebees. Like wasps, male carpenter bees die soon after they mate. However, the same applies to the female ones that die after they serve their purpose, which is to lay their eggs and seal up the larvae.
There are 47 known species of bumblebees native to North America. They flap their wings approximately 240 times per second and reach speeds of up to 18km per hour when flying. Bumblebees are large (about ¾ inch long) with stocky yellow and black bodies covered with hairs, which is where the pollen sticks to.
Hornet hives are dominated by the queens, who are the only ones that can reproduce. The other hornets (in their large majority) are asexual female workers responsible for gathering food, feeding the young, protecting the colony, and, of course, building the hive. The few male hornets have only one purpose, and that is to mate with the queen, which is why they die soon after their task is complete.
Hornets abandon their nests in winter, leaving them with only the young queens and their eggs to make it through the low temperatures, by finding a protected area either inside human properties or under tree barks.
They eat accomplished predators, as well as tree sap and eliminate bees, flies, and other insects. When nesting near humans, they are considered pests and usually get the worst of encounters with humans when their nests are destroyed or even worse poisoned, which is a huge blow to the ecosystem. For that reason, they should be removed from a property using Eco-friendly methods that send them someplace else once and for all, letting them continue their significant role.
Had a wasps nest the size of a basketball. Tony and his crew showed up on time and took care of it in a few minutes. No issues, very professional. I had given it some thought to doing it myself. Glad I left it to the pros. Thanks again for the great service and will recommend you to anyone.
