Mississauga has recently ranked third place on a top 25 list put out earlier this month. Unfortunately, the list was for the “rattiest cities” in Ontario. This study was conducted by a large pest control company and is based on the number of commercial and residential rodent treatments the company did in each city. The data does not necessarily suggest that Mississauga has the third most rodent infestations per capita, but it does imply that Mississauga residents need to be more vigilant in their rodent prevention efforts. This is best done by eliminating any easy access points into your home, any easily accessible food sources and seal off any ideal areas where rodents can find shelter.

Over the next 3 years, Health Canada has proposed to begin phasing out a popular Neonicotinoid pesticide used in Agriculture. The name of this pesticide is imidacloprid and although it works great for killing agricultural pests, unfortunately remnants of it get washed into nearby water systems. Studies conducted by Health Canada have found that levels of this pesticide in nearby water systems have been as high as 11.9 parts per billion, much higher than what is considered to be safe at 0.041 parts per billion. These studies also concluded that there is a potential risk to birds and small mammals who feed on seeds sprayed by this pesticide, further solidifying Health Canada’s decision to ban this pesticide.

Illegal and horrific leg-hold traps have been found for a second time in recent months with badly injured raccoons caught in them. The city of Vancouver is offering a reward for anyone who has info on these occurrences as this is not only illegal but also considered archaic. These traps are not only terrible to use against wildlife pests, they are also dangerous to humans too. The most troubling part about the leg-hold trap found this month is that it was found in an area near a park that is frequently visited by young children and pets. An organization known as Fur-bearers has put out a $1000 reward for anyone who has information regarding the perpetrators of this horrific act.
