For student Isabel Faria, a student at Carleton University, Ottawa, her first night at her new apartment could not have gone worse. She was bitten by bed bugs and woke up the next morning with red, swollen rashes all over her arm. Faria claims that she believes that even though her landlord was aware of this problem in the apartment, he failed to bring it to her knowledge, as well as to other tenants. When she informed the landlord, he refused to believe that the bugs were from his building and did not want to pay for fumigation. She also had to visit the hospital, stay in a hotel and miss the first of her summer semester. Faria is seeking compensation from the landlord for all the expenses incurred. She was visiting her mother, who is 71 years old, wheelchair-bound and paralyzed on one side. Cote found the bugs when she opened the bathroom door in her mother’s room. A four-storey condo in Calgary is battling a rather persistent bed bug problem, and residents of the building are not happy with their living conditions. Marvin Merraro, a resident of the condo, says that he could see bed bugs every time he moved anything, including the couch, his clothes, the kitchen drawers, and in his bedroom too. He added that it was clear to see the bed bugs had nested. Marvin even had to vacate his apartment while the landlord tried to treat the bug problem. Between May and October alone, his apartment was sprayed three times, but the bugs keep returning. According to the pest management company, the surrounding units, as well as the common areas in the condo, have to be treated too, to exterminate the bed bugs successfully.
